Today I went to Koinup.com check out the winners of Koinup’s 20,000L$ Windlight Contest and unfortunately, I didn’t win but that is just how contests are, there are winners and there are non-winners. LOL!
Anyway, I am still happy about the result because, in a way, the Judges, together with Koinup’s Community, did find one of […]

It seems that Second Life’s viewer can also be affected by this exploit which was recently found with Quicktime. We all know that Second Life uses Quicktime to play in-world movies and because of this the viewer can be open to exploits too. It is strongly suggested to turn off or disable videos for the mean time until a fix is developed. Also, the exploit does not only affects Second Life’s viewer but all platforms that use Quicktime.
I haven’t really used that feature for some time now. I think the last time I watched a streaming video in Second Life was almost 3 months ago. I disabled it, together with voice chat, because both features are giving me too much lag in-world.
Anyway, there is a new viewer and the windlight viewer is also updated. The problem I encountered now with the windlight viewer is that it tells me that my machine is below the required specifications to run Second Life. WHAT! I think there is a bug in windlight’s hardware detection because I can run windlight without any problems.

With Linden Labs hyping the Windlight First Look Viewer so much that I finally gave in to my curiosity. I downloaded, installed and logged on to Second Life with it.
But first, I think they’ve resolved some issues with Second Life because my computer hasn’t freeze for 2 days now.
Now back to Windlight, I did feel that the Windlight Viewer is a little bit better than the regular viewer and I’m not talking about graphics quality or the new environment enhancements. No, I’m talking about performance. It renders and draws objects faster and the choppiness that I’ve always experienced was greatly reduced. So, if they were able to improve Second Life’s performance with the first look viewer then why can’t they apply this improvements (less the enhanced environment and other eye candies) to the regular/non-windlight viewer? I guess we’ll just have to wait for the next update and I’m sure that many residents will be happy if the regular viewer’s performance improves.

My windlight viewer setting wasn’t at Ultra because my video card won’t be able to handle it but except for the great looking environment, I didn’t notice anything different (graphics wise) with it. The graphics of the objects, avatars, etc. look the same with the regular viewer and I’m pretty sure that my settings for both viewers are the same. I guess, the difference will be noticeable if both viewers were set to high or in windlight’s case ULTRA but performance wise, the windlight viewer feels better.
Now for those having performance issues with their viewers, regular or windlight, Torley Linden has posted a Video Tutorial on How to easily boost viewer performance. Again, the tip applies to both regular and windlight viewers.

The video tutorial mostly covers the use of a new feature which is the Lag Meter and to how to monitor performance using the Statistic Bar. An additional to windlight is how to tweak the settings for better performance and the use of the feature called Avatar Impostor where avatars are transformed to animated cutouts to improve viewer performance.
Residents also suggested that the small red and green bar located at the top right corner of the viewer that measures bandwidth and packet loss be returned. I do agree with this because those little bars have always helped me determine how bad my current viewer situation is. The Lag Meter is great but you’ll have to open and close it to use it or, if they don’t like bringing those little bars back, they can add a Hot Key for the Lag Meter. This will enable users to easily bring up the window.
Right now, I may use the Windlight First Look viewer more because of better performance than the regular viewer but if the regular viewer’s performance improves then I will switch back to it.

I tried to login into Second Life just now but an error message greeted me.

The error message was “Login Failed. The inventory system is currently unavailable!” Before I was only freezing but now I can’t login and reading through Second Life’s official blog it seems that I’m not the only one who experienced this error. Many residents are experiencing this login error and according to the blog that this error “is likely to last until tomorrow”!!!
A few residents are saying that the problem is with the user or with the computer running the client and not Second Life. Now, this is untrue because if it was true then why would Linden Labs post updates regarding these errors. There is a problem within the internal system of Second Life and they should find long term solutions for it and not short term ones. Informing the public about these errors or problems is one thing but actually fixing it is another.
Every week we see the same problems and every week it get fixed only to happen again in another week.
Second Life is very lucky because there is no real competition for them and it could take a few more years before an actual competition emerges. Right now, you either love it or leave it but I don’t think that’s a very good way to attract new residents.
We all want Second Life to grow because as it grows, opportunities grows with it but with too many problems affecting logins, inventory, support, network failures, asset failures, etc. are not going to help it.
I guess there’s nothing much anyone can do except wait it out and while I’m waiting I think I’ll have another crack at Final Fantasy VII…
