We were all set to gush over
Super Mario Kart and the promise of some charmingly retro party gaming (for two players at a time, of course, which we suppose is part of the retro charm), but Gust disrupted our plans by releasing something on WiiWare that is weird and ill-advised enough to demand our attention.
Game Sound Station is a subscription-based music streaming service available on WiiWare — almost exclusively for listening to Gust game soundtracks. If you’d like to pay for a week of unlimited
Atelier and
Ar Tonelico game music, here’s your chance!
The other WiiWare game, peakvox escape virus, is sort of a Snake crossed with Geometry Wars experience. As a DNA codon, you pick up other DNA around a level to form a chain, carefully navigating your increasingly long chain around enemy viruses. The game has a variety of other modes, including one that turns it into a shooter.

This week’s Japanese Virtual Console releases aren’t going to thrill anybody: another
Langrisser strategy game that we’re unlikely to see, and
Mappy, which you
can and
should play on your North American or European system. But the WiiWare releases this week should prove pretty exciting — to Japan. Except for
Onitore, which is
Drill Sergeant Mindstrong.
Out of Galaxy: Koshika is a new manga from Leiji Matsumoto, creator of Galaxy Express 999 and Space Battleship Yamato (as well as, yes, that Daft Punk thing). It’s the first manga title to premiere on Wii, and it’s a big deal! Also exciting: the return of Tecmo’s classic Tsuppari Oozumo sumo wrestling series. The new 3D models are nowhere near as cute as the Famicom sprites, but we’re still happy to see the game’s return. Is WiiWare low-risk enough for a localized sumo game?
Virtual Console:
- Der Langrisser (Super Famicom, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)
- Mappy (Arcade, 800 Wii Points)

It may seem like unimaginable luxury to us, but for Japan, a week with just two new games on the Virtual Console and one on WiiWare is light. The last time the releases were this sparse was three weeks ago, with an update that, coincidentally, also included a Sega franchise game (a franchise that also included a Shinobi game) and a WiiWare minigolf title. Spoooooky. We are quite jealous of The Revenge of Shinobi, which Japan gets this week as The Super Shinobi, and which we may never get.

Though we aren’t monitoring an actual Japanese Wii to be sure, we’re quite confident that the SuperGrafx version of Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, originally slated for October, will actually be available today on the Virtual Console in Japan. Hudson is totally not making much of a big deal about it, labeling it as a plain PC Engine game and selling it for 600 Points — not the 800 that CD-ROM titles command! But we think it’s really cool to see a representative from such a rare and obscure system on the Virtual Console.
It’s joined by some shmups: L-Dis, a cute-em-up from Cho Aniki developer NCS, Formation Z, a Famicom shooter from the late Jaleco, and Galaxy Force II, which might as well not exist without the super-fun arcade machine.
The one WiiWare game this week is the fantastic-looking retro-parody game from Sega, Pole’s Big Adventure.

So, the games that were going to come out last week? They’re coming out this week. Last week? Nothing. Either Nintendo changed the date on their VC website, or we just made a mistake, but we can assure you now that the following games are, uh, supposed to come out today.
These are still noteworthy releases. We find a top-down samurai action game from Nintendo fairly special, at least. The surprise release of Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels gives us a bit of hope for a US release of this (geographical) rarity. As for the Bubble Bobble sequel, our feelings are and will remain as follows: yay!

Nintendo has released the planned May lineup of Virtual Console games for Japan, and while it doesn’t include any megatons (like last month most certainly did), there are at least a lot of games on the list. The first two MSX games, Eggy and Aleste, are supposed to make their fashionably late appearance, but we find it a lot easier to believe that they’ll be bumped for some Wonder Boy ports.
Other interesting games, which may actually be released, include: Front Mission Series: Gun Hazard, a shooter similar to Cybernator (in fact director Toshiro Tsuchida worked on both games) and based on the Front Mission series of strategy games; Star Parodier, the “silly” Star Soldier game; and Martial Champion, a CD-based Street Fighter clone from Konami. Hit the break for the full list!
Famicom:
Super Famicom:
- Axelay
- Ganbare Goemon 2
- Front Mission Series: Gun Hazard
Master System:
- Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Mega Drive:
- Gynoug (Wings of Wor)
- Super Fantasy Zone
PC Engine:
- Star Parodier (CD)
- Fire Pro Wrestling 2nd BOUT
- Break In
- Martial Champion (CD)
Neo Geo:
- Fatal Fury 2
- Ninja Combat
- Burning Fight

It's another week of high quantity on Japan's Virtual Console -- but that doesn't necessarily mean that, when employing their shovel, Nintendo didn't pick up some
good stuff. In fact, overall, this is a very solid Virtual Console week, featuring five games new to the VC in any region. We're pretty likely to at least get
Ghosts 'n' Goblins soon in the U.S., and
Eternal Champions's Japanese release makes an upcoming release pretty likely. We're hoping for
Nuts & Milk ourselves, just because the name makes us laugh every time we see it. Not because of any prurient reason -- we just think it looks like a shopping list.
- Ghosts 'n' Goblins (Famicom, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)
- Nuts & Milk (Famicom, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)
- Eternal Champions (Mega Drive, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points)
- A-Train III (PC Engine, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)
- Top Hunter (Neo Geo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)

The biggest surprise for us this week is right there in the title.
Balloon Fight is one of the canonical first-generation NES games. It's already out in the
U.S. and
Europe, and it was even
remade for the DS in Japan in a Club Nintendo-exclusive
Tingle version. So why has it taken so long to show up on the Virtual Console in Japan? In the time that Japanese Wii owners have been waiting for
Balloon Fight, they've gotten
two versions of
Wonder Boy in Monster World. Similarly, today brings the
second version of
Gradius II. Speaking of repeat performances, we'd like to point out how awesomely Treasure is represented on the VC.
Light Crusader is the fourth Treasure game to appear on the VC so far, and we appreciate every one.
Even Light Crusader.
- Balloon Fight (Famicom, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)
- Light Crusader (Mega Drive, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)
- Dragon Spirit (PC Engine, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)
- Gradius II GOFER no Yabou (PC Engine, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)
- Baseball Stars 2 (Neo Geo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)

For the second week in a row, American gamers have
gotten the red carpet in comparison to Japanese Wii owners. The Virtual Console uploads for this week are tame compared to the wish-fulfilling awesomeness of
Super Mario Bros. 3 and the
VISUALSHOCK! SPEEDSHOCK! SOUNDSHOCK! of
Alien Soldier.
The Japanese releases are by no means bad, and, in fact, there are some games that will genuinely interest people, like the first
King of Fighters and the first console
Goemon game, which would lead to the beloved
Legend of the Mystical Ninja. Then there's ... the "Sega Club" educational
Ecco sequel, and the
Wonderboy game with
yet another character swap. Poor Wonderboy. Why couldn't he
ever star in two console versions of the same game?
Dynastic Hero is actually another version of
Wonderboy in Monster World, which ... is already on the VC. Interesting choice for one of the first CD-based PC Engine games on the VC. And by "interesting" we mean "a terrible waste."
