Hackers add Roy to Super Smash Bros. Brawl

July 1st, 2009 by David Hinkle

Smashboards forum user goodoldganon wasn’t satisfied with all of the characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. His main contention with the game was that it lacked several key Melee characters. So, he did what any sensible member of society would do: He wrote a letter to Nintendo He hacked the crap out of the game.

As evidenced in the videos past the break, this isn’t merely a texture swap, as goodoldganon also incorporated Roy’s moves into the game. By delegating the hack to a certain color set of Marth’s (here it’s the red suit), he can pick Roy at will and seamlessly integrate him into the game. Sure, the bottom of the screen still says Marth, but, for all intents and purposes, this is the Roy you remember.

It’s impressive stuff, to say the least, so head past the break and check out the footage of a fighter’s return to the arena.

[Thanks, Slashy!]

Pachter calls March Wii console sales ’somewhat disconcerting’

April 18th, 2009 by Ben Gilbert

Michael Pachter, analyst for Wedbush Morgan, isn’t freaking out, and he wants you to know that you shouldn’t be either. He notes, while speaking on the subject of March NPD numbers, that even though the month saw hardware sales numbers drop across the board, that really has more to do with extraordinary sales for all comparable months. Speaking with GameSpot, Pachter said, “It’s entirely possible that we were just up against an impossible comparison … we’re looking at a comparison to Grand Theft Auto IV in April, so it’s likely that April will be down as well,” referring to the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl in March of 2008 and the subsequent month’s GTAIV.

What he does find worrisome, however, is declining Wii software sales after a year of strong console sales, reportedly doubling the system’s installed-base. “Given that the installed base of Wii consoles has doubled in the past year, we find it remarkable (and somewhat disconcerting) that Wii software sales were actually down year-over-year in March, dropping by $72 million, or 26 percent.” Pachter doesn’t see the future as grim though, pointing out that this summer’s release of Wii MotionPlus and Wii Sports Resort should put some wind back in Nintendo’s sales sails. We’ll just have to wait ’til August NPDs are released to find out!

Super Smash Bros. Brawl delayed until March 9th

January 15th, 2008 by JC Fletcher

Filed under:

Super Smash Bros. Brawl just wasn’t done breaking hearts. After the crushing disappointment of having our $19.98 preorders canceled, Nintendo’s latest news is a kick while we’re down. And not a fun in-game kick, from Yoshi or something. The regular kind.

The rumors were true. Nintendo of America has announced that Brawl is delayed until March 9th. The official reason? “Development is taking slightly longer than expected.” We’re just going to assume that the real reason is that Nintendo’s taking the time to add (character you want). The Japanese release has been delayed, as well, until the 31st of this month. Masahiro Sakurai has apologized for the delay on the Dojo site.

For those of you who are counting, this is the second delay for this game. Once upon a time, we thought we were going to be Brawling online as soon as December 3rd. It’s now … considerably later than that, is what it is.

Dojo update: Add some color to your Brawl

November 21st, 2007 by Chris Greenhough

Being able to switch the color of your fighter is pretty much a given in any Smash Bros. game, and Brawl uses this feature to give us the likes of Fire Mario, Mario as Wario, an albino Donkey Kong, Dark Link, Fusion Suit Samus, and Snake in a variety of fetching camouflage designs.

Each character comes with six different variations, which can be toggled on the character select screen. To see more of these, hit the gallery below.

Dojo update: Smart Bomb and Training Mode

November 20th, 2007 by David Hinkle

Today's dojo update is a "2-for-1" deal, giving us insight into a new game mode and in-game item. First, the new game mode allows players to set up scenarios for training purposes. As you can see above, you control everything right down to the flow of time, allowing you to perfect your craft before stepping into the field of combat with actual opponents. Considering how long it's been since we've played a Smash Bros. game, we're probably going to need this.

The new in-game item is the Smart Bomb, which can be used to destroy everyone. Upon launching the item at your opponent, it will detonate and the explosion will steadily grow. As it expands, it traps other combatants into it. But, you have to watch out, because it can also trap you in.

Dojo update: Hang out at Ridley’s place

November 9th, 2007 by Chris Greenhough

Another day on the dojo and another stage is unveiled. The seventeenth in all. This time it's Norfair, the place called "home" by chief Space Pirate Ridley (already confirmed as a playable character, you may recall, but with the Ice Climbers returning, who knows if this is still the case) from the Metroid games.

Once again, there's almost a game within a game here, with fights periodically interrupted by gushing tidal waves of lava that can come from any direction. These wash over the entire level, with only a single safe spot (complete with hatches that close at the sign of danger) remaining untouched. Problem is, there's not exactly a lot of room on your anti-lava platform, so you'll have to scrap it out for a space. A bit like musical chairs then, only with the added risk of getting horrifically burned alive in molten hot goo. We like!

Dojo update: Gray Fox enters the fray

November 7th, 2007 by Chris Greenhough

There's a tasty double serving of updates today on the dojo, but the lowdown on Brawl's "Grab and Throw" manoeuver is likely to be overshadowed by the inclusion of a second Metal Gear Solid character.

The good news is it's not Raiden (we fear the internets would implode with fanboy vitriol), but Frank Jaeger, a.k.a cyborg ninja Gray Fox, a.k.a That Dude Who Engages In A Totally Badass Battle With Metal Gear REX Only To Get Heroically Stomped. The bad news: he's not playable, but merely an Assist Trophy. Nevertheless, a pretty cool addition.

Dojo update: Fox’s Misfortune

November 5th, 2007 by David Hinkle

Today, the dojo reveals a new Adventure Mode in Fox's Misfortune. Based on the video above, it looks like Fox crashes his Arwing and finds Diddy in trouble with some long, snake-like creature. Of course, being the hero he is, Fox saves Diddy and, we assume, embarks on a quest to do some more good. Honestly, the trailer is great and all, but we have no idea what this mode will consist of.

Wii Warm Up: Best Brawl reveal so far?

November 2nd, 2007 by Candace Savino

Filed under:

As we get closer to (and yet, further from) the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, there have been many exciting Dojo updates. Perhaps we're jumping the gun here, but what's been your favorite reveal so far? Could it be the addition of a popular blue hedgehog? Perhaps, the stage builder level? Maybe you're excited about the music, or the inclusion of a favorite character as an assist trophy?

There's a lot to choose from, but we challenge you to choose one. If you really can't limit yourself, though, don't worry -- we won't hold it against you. We understand these types of decisions can be difficult sometimes.

Friday Video: People love Ryan Drummond

October 19th, 2007 by Alisha Karabinus

Filed under:

Maybe we're not as up on our Sonic fandom as we should be. Legions of fans have been sounding a battle cry, and where were we? Not paying attention, clearly. But now we're aware that an injustice has been foisted upon dedicated Sonic fans, fans who want something very simple:

Ryan Drummond.

Ryan Drummond provided the voice of Sonic in the 1999 Sonic Adventure and in several games, until he was replaced with jonny-come-lately Jason Griffith. But what about the fans who adored Drummond? What solace can we offer them? All we have lying around is a shoulder to cry on and a box of tissues ... but wait! Perhaps there will be a solution! Dedicated fans have begun a campaign to get Drummond back (at least for Brawl), and that is the subject of this week's video spotlight. The above video is but one part; you can continue the saga here, and in a bevy of related videos on the subject.

[Thanks, Preston!]
