Rumor: Resident Evil ‘Darkside Chronicles’ coming to Wii

March 11th, 2009 by Ludwig Kietzmann

According to the latest issue of Japanese mag Famitsu, the Wii’s Resident Evil fans indeed have something to be “very happy” about. Well, at least if they’re keen on another round of super-speed Resident Evil nostalgia, likely presented in the form of another first-person point-and-shooter. Though Capcom USA has yet to officially announce the game nor any specific details, Biohazard: The Darkside Chronicles looks to feature Resident Evil 2’s protagonist pair, Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Oh, and zombies. Lots of ‘em.

We’ll update with more information as soon as we can.

[Thanks, Kevin]

Rumor: Capcom to announce RE Code: Veronica Wii-make March 12

March 8th, 2009 by Griffin McElroy

The rumor mill has been spinning off its axis since Capcom project manager Matt Dahlgren told us that Wii-owning Resident Evil fans will be “very happy, very soon,” inciting feverish speculation on what project will instill said happiness. Game Focus’ recent interview with Dahlgren might put said speculation to rest — according to him, fans of Resident Evil Code: Veronica should pay close attention on March 12 for “news you should be very pleased with.”

The date that the pleasing announcement will apparently be made coincides with Capcom’s San Francisco launch event for Resident Evil 5, a perfect opportunity for the unveiling of a new project — but is an updated Wii version of Veronica the project everyone was hoping for? To tell the truth, we were holding out hope for a Resident Evil: Survivor remake. Oh, well.

Touch Ruminations: Mixing the Old with the New

March 6th, 2009 by David Hinkle

In Touch Ruminations, former DS and Wii Fanboy Lead David Hinkle talks about whatever he feels like. He’s a jerk like that. This week, it’s all about boys, blobs, and little Macs, and how mixing the old with the new is a good thing. The opinions expressed here belong to the author and don’t necessarily reflect those of Joystiq, Weblogs Inc. or its affiliates.

This week has been an exciting one for Wii owners. First and foremost, A Boy and His Blob is making a comeback! On top of that, Nintendo informed us that old-school controls will be included in Punch-Out!! for Wii. It’s a wonderful mixture of old and new, and shows us that there is an incredible well of older titles that can be tapped for today’s market in this manner. Nintendo has been doing that with the Virtual Console, presenting older, dated games via a new, easy-to-use interface, bringing them to a new audience. It’s a wonderful mixture of classic and new sensibilities, and something I would like to see more of. Of course, A Boy and His Blob and Punch-Out!! could both be horrible, horrible games for all I know, so take that as you will.

Resident Evil 5 producer wants more Evil on Wii

February 14th, 2009 by Richard Mitchell

Speaking to Eurogamer, Resident Evil 5 producer Masachika Kawata intimated that he’d like to see more of Resident Evil on Nintendo’s waggling financial giant. Said Kawata, “Personally, I would like to create something on Wii in the Resident Evil family.” He further stated that the team doesn’t know what it would be, as it’s been hard at work on Resident Evil 5, but asked gamers to “watch this space.” Thus far, staring at our computer monitor has resulted in nothing but eyestrain.

Kawata also spoke briefly to concerns raised about Resident Evil 5’s control scheme, saying that the team “reflected” on the control scheme for some time. While Kawata expects some may dislike the controls, he — and the team — believe it “does not reflect negatively on the game as a whole,” but is instead “part of a forward-looking process.” Kawata hopes that even those who dislike the controls will enjoy the overall product.

See Resident Evil again for the very first time

September 28th, 2008 by Alisha Karabinus

Filed under:

Resident Evil sure looks familiar, doesn’t it? That’s probably because this latest Capcom port is just the GameCube version with a dash of motion. That isn’t to say it doesn’t look good (it does), it’s just that this game has been remade, reworked, and re-released a lot.

How many times do we need to replay great games — particularly when we can already play them on the system in question?

Capcom lets you choose who loves Golf

February 10th, 2008 by Chris Greenhough

Filed under:

As the picture above demonstrates, Camelot’s We Love Golf will allow us to play a round as Apollo Justice, while other characters confirmed for the title include Chun Li (Street Fighter), Jill Valentine (Resident Evil 3), and Arthur (Ghouls ‘n Ghosts). We can’t comprehend how anybody would not want to play golf as Apollo Justice, but if you’re not a fan of the bequiffed lawyer (weirdo), then Capcom has set up a poll on its official blog to ask readers which characters they’d most like to see in the U.S and European versions of the game.

You can vote for one female and one male character, with Cammy (Street Fighter), Morrigan (Darkstalkers), Rouge (Power Stone), Roll Caskett (Mega Man Legends), and Ashley Graham (Resident Evil) making up the female category.

Meanwhile, the male list consists of Frank West (Dead Rising), Balrog (Street Fighter), Guy (Final Fight), Ken (Street Fighter), Dhalsim (Street Fighter), and Captain Commando (from, uh, Captain Commando). And yes, we know of at least one person who will be sorely disappointed with the lack of Zangief in that selection.

Play Umbrella Chronicles like a reviewer

November 19th, 2007 by JC Fletcher

Filed under:

In the spirit of generating hits for their new blog openness, Capcom has made their Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles reviewer's guide available on Flickr as a gallery. The 12-page document explains all the weapons in the game and how to use them, along with the game's controls. It also introduces the characters, in case the only Resident Evil character with whom you've familiarized yourself is "Zombie."

There aren't really any secrets revealed or anything; the reviewer's guide doesn't contain any helpful cheats or other tips to help reviewers fast-track through the game. But it's cool to see this kind of stuff that usually doesn't get released to the public. Also, the thing is nicely laid out.

Metareview: Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles

November 14th, 2007 by JC Fletcher

Filed under:

We've all been as restless as the walking dead waiting for the first original Resident Evil game on the Wii, wondering if the new gun game will manage to outshine the previous Gun Survivor games and provide both a faithful Resident Evil experience and an awesome light-gun game. Now that reviewers have torn into the title, we can find out if Umbrella Chronicles was the Master of Unlocking ... their hearts.

Gametrailers -- 83%: This isn't really a summation of the review, nor is it representative of the whole review, but we just wanted to post it, to point out the kinds of things video game reviewers have to think about: "While Umbrella Chronicles is fantastic overall, there are a few gripes. Annoyances like leeches and small spiders jump at the screen, forcing you to mindlessly shake the remote until you've sliced through them all. Slashing at a creature that's presumably on your face breaks the sense of immersion. Also, the vomit that some zombies spew at you can be quickly shot out of the sky, which doesn't make much sense."

1UP -- 75%: 1UP's review finds the game slower-paced and more involved than the average gun game, and loaded with Resident Evil series references: "The files, notes, and diaries you'll often attain while doing so are just one example of the copious fan service that seems to be the true driving force behind the entire experience. Whether you're playing from new perspectives in old scenarios or filling in story gaps with cut-scenes or entire levels, there's a ridiculous amount of information and background for Resident Evil nuts to absorb. The convoluted, poorly acted narrative is as dismissive to newcomers as ever, but they'll be in it for different reasons anyhow (zombies + guns = fun)."

GamePro -- 85%: GamePro's reviewer decided to tease another console's upcoming game in the review for this one, presumably just to be mean: "It combines the atmospheric charm of the ResEvil series with awesome light-gun gameplay, then throws in a wealth of bonus material to unlock and discover. It's the perfect way to prepare yourself for the upcoming Resident Evil 5."

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is looking purdy

November 3rd, 2007 by Candace Savino

Filed under:

We've been showing you a lot of Ghost Squad videos lately, but that's no reason to forget the other rail shooter coming out this season. As you can see from the video above (which is titled "The Opening Video," but it's probably just a trailer), the game looks mighty fine, indeed. Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is set for release on November 13, which we know will put some more hurt on a lot of wallets. We're definitely interested, at least.
