Michael Pachter, analyst for Wedbush Morgan, isn’t freaking out, and he wants you to know that you shouldn’t be either. He notes, while speaking on the subject of March NPD numbers, that even though the month saw hardware sales numbers drop across the board, that really has more to do with extraordinary sales for all comparable months. Speaking with GameSpot, Pachter said, “It’s entirely possible that we were just up against an impossible comparison … we’re looking at a comparison to Grand Theft Auto IV in April, so it’s likely that April will be down as well,” referring to the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl in March of 2008 and the subsequent month’s GTAIV.
What he does find worrisome, however, is declining Wii software sales after a year of strong console sales, reportedly doubling the system’s installed-base. “Given that the installed base of Wii consoles has doubled in the past year, we find it remarkable (and somewhat disconcerting) that Wii software sales were actually down year-over-year in March, dropping by $72 million, or 26 percent.” Pachter doesn’t see the future as grim though, pointing out that this summer’s release of Wii MotionPlus and Wii Sports Resort should put some wind back in Nintendo’s sales sails. We’ll just have to wait ’til August NPDs are released to find out!

In case you needed it confirmed yet again: Nintendo totally wins at selling stuff. Gamasutra went through the NPD statistics for 2008 software sales with a fine tooth-comb, and discovered that Wii and DS titles formed almost half of all games sold during 2008.
Of the 268 million games sold in the U.S. last year, 132 million (49%) were for Nintendo platforms, compared to 86 million (32%) for Sony consoles, and 50 million (19%) for Microsoft. Furthermore, the Wii software tie-in ratio isn’t looking too shabby: an even six games per system, an identical figure to that of the PlayStation 3.
For more statistics that make us want to joyously high-five a bobcat, hit up Gamasutra.

Let’s make this clear: Wii sold a helluva lot of units in North America during December. 2.15 million consoles in a single month is a number Sony and Microsoft can only dream about right now, but there’s no doubt that the figures weren’t as grand as expected. He who is Pachter predicted the console would clear the 3 million mark, only for the platform to fall short by 850,000 units.
Why the lower-than-expected sales? As usual, analysts reckon they have the answer: more of those accursed hardware shortages. EEDAR’s Jesse Divnich and Deutsche Bank analyst Jeetil Patel both believe demand outweighed supply for the third December running, with Divnich stating the Wii would have sold “north of 4 million units” if more consoles had been produced in time.
Phew, panic over! Wii’s not the next N-Gage or anything!

It’s not surprising to see that hardware sales rose significantly in December, but what is surprising is the comparatively small progress made by the Wii — only a 5% increase from November, compared to some big gains for the competition. People who are paid a lot more than us predicted the Wii would smash the 3 million sales barrier, but nope. We’re putting this down to a lack of holiday season supply, or November’s figures simply being amazing.
On the other hand, selling 2.15 million of anything in a single month isn’t too shabby!
- DS: 3.04m
1.47m (94%)
- Wii: 2.15m
110K (5%)
- Xbox 360: 1.44m
604K (72%)
- PSP: 1.02m
599K (142%)
- PS3: 726K
348K (92%)
- PS2: 410K
204K (99%)

Gamasutra has compiled a bunch of charts showing the best-selling games of 2008 (so far) across all formats. At first glance, the results are thoroughly predictable — it’s yet more Wii dominance in the U.S. — but there are interesting factoids to be drawn from this.
Wii Play, for example, looks like finishing in the top five games of the year for the second year running. Even more impressively, Gamasutra thinks it could sell more copies in 2008 than in 2007, which is all kinds of crazy. Surely that would be some kind of first?
The top two spots are held by Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii, a pair of titles that we always expected to sell well, but to beat the likes of Wii Fit or other games aimed at Nintendo’s broadened audience? Speaking of Wii Fit, it tops the chart for estimated revenue so far this year, thanks to its higher retail price. We’ll reproduce the 2008 YTD sales table below, but Gamasutra has other data worth looking at here.
1. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) — 3.5 million
2. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) — 3.4 million
3. Grand Theft Auto IV (360) — 3.2 million
4. Wii Play (Wii) — 3.0 million
5. Wii Fit (Wii) — 2.8 million

The NPD numbers aren’t going to be available until later this week, but Michael Pachter is still doing his thing and tossing some predictions out there. With that Grand Theft Auto IV game releasing in April (and shattering records like crazy), many might think that Nintendo is going to have to relinquish its throne for a short while, like when that Halo 3 game released. Pachter doesn’t think so, however, and called for another victory for Nintendo.
600,000 units is the magic number, according to the analyst, as he says Wii will once again reign supreme when the April NPD numbers release. Considering a pretty big Wii title released during that month, we’re inclined to agree with the man.

Rejoice!
The Wii has managed to skedaddle back on top, enjoying the comfortable cushion of the NPD throne. In resting its behind in the big chair, you can see the Wii made sure that the Xbox 360's time at the top was
short-lived. Welcome back, Nintendo. We've missed you.
The hardware sales:
- Nintendo Wii: 519K (5 million total)
- Nintendo DS: 458K (13.6 million total)
- Microsoft Xbox 360: 366K (7.1 million total)
- Sony PSP: 286K (8.8 million total)
- Sony PlayStation 2: 184K (39.4 million total)

Turns out, one man's
prediction was correct, as the Wii was finally knocked off its throne in September, thanks to
Halo 3. We know, if you need to take a moment, we understand. We are shocked and saddened here at Wii Fanboy Estates, as we lay in the fetal position in a puddle of our own tears, only breaking away to make the occasional blog post.
Without further ado, let's look at the hardware figures:
- Microsoft Xbox 360: 527.8K (6.8 million total)
- Nintendo Wii: 501K (4.5 million total)
- Nintendo DS: 495.8K (13.2 million total)
- Sony PlayStation 2: 215K (39.3 million total)
- Sony PSP: 284.5K (8.6 million total)
- Sony PlayStation 3: 119.4K (1.87 million total)
Be sure to hit the break for the list of top-selling software titles.
- Halo 3 (all three SKUs - Xbox 360) - 3.3 million
- Wii Play w/ remote (Wii) - 282K
- Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS) - 224K
- Madden NFL 08 (PS2) - 205K
- Skate (Xbox 360) - 175K
- Madden NFL 08 (Xbox 360) - 173K
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii) - 167K
- BioShock (Xbox 360) - 150K
- Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day (DS) - 141K
- Heavenly Sword (PS3) - 139K
As you can see, the Wii still has
Wii Play and
Metroid Prime 3 on the software list, which helps ease the blow some, but ultimately is not enough. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have to drown ourselves in a tub of
Americone Dream.

Gaming analyst Michael Pachter is reporting that the Wii could be knocked from its comfortable, safe throne this month, as he is predicting the September NPD numbers will show the Xbox 360 on top. Apparently, some game called
Halo 3 was a big deal and everyone perhaps went nutty over it. Yeah, we don't get it.
Pachter explained his predictions, stating "forecasts for the Wii and the DS reflect our belief that supplies remain somewhat constrained." He added that "Our Xbox 360 forecast reflects an expected boost in hardware sales due to the introduction of
Halo 3." Well, games do make the system, so we guess we understand.
Oh well, what goes up, must come down, right?
