It wouldn’t be Monday without new games to download across Nintendo platforms. This week’s highlight is definitely Hudson’s first-person soaker, Water Warfare. It’s a neat concept, but we really think Hudson could’ve spent some time tightening up the graphics in level three.

This week in Europe, Hudson Soft has one release on all three Wii download services. That’s a pretty impressive feat, even if the individual
games don’t seem that exciting. We suppose 50 sudoku puzzles for 200 points is nice, and
SimEarth is a good game.
The Hudson releases are joined by Taito’s Puzzle Bobble/Bust a Move update and by Altered Beast. Now, we love Altered Beast more than most people (by which we mean we love it some), but 900 points for the arcade version? What’s that about?
WiiWare:
- Puzzle Bobble Plus! (1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)
- Water Warfare (1-2 players offline, 2-8 online, 800 Wii Points)
Virtual Console:
- Altered Beast (Arcade, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)
- SimEarth (Turbografx-16 CD-ROM, 1 player,800 Wii Points)
DSiWare:
- Sudoku 50 for Beginners (1 player, 200 DSi Points)

The Japanese version of
Flipnote Studio, called
Ugoku Memo-Chou, integrates with a special version of Japan’s Hatena blog site, allowing users to upload, share, and view videos made using the DSiWare animation app. Soon after the launch of the Japanese site, Hatena put up a partially translated version of the Ugomemo Hatena site as a preview of the eventual North American version.
The site has been somewhat of a work-in-progress since then, with some extra pages translated, including the explanation of the premium Ugomemo Hatena Plus service, and some content remaining in Japanese. It’s a sign that we’ll be able to share our insane sprite sheet flip books and cute Mario animations immediately after the service launches, whenever that happens.

Nintendo of Japan has announced plans to release the
DSi console in three cheerful new colors: pink, lime green, and metallic blue. All three will be released on the same day, March 20, and will sell for 19,800 yen ($195), the same price as the currently available black and white DSi systems.
Haters of the North American blue version will now be able to direct their ire toward these garish new colors, out of our reach though they may be. Fans of the blue may find themselves envious of these even more vivid colors. We’re sorting out some rather complex emotions ourselves.

Don’t worry if you haven’t been following the DSi for the last few months — your crazy friends at Joystiq Nintendo have been all over it. Check out our unboxing of a Japanese system for a hands-on rundown of features, and have a look at the awesome DSiWare downloads that have come to Japan. Then torture yourself with the limited-edition FFCC: Echoes of Time DSi that probably won’t make it here!

Back in the days when the DSi was young (November), Eric demonstrated how slowly the system’s browser operated, documenting the agonizing process of trying to read DS Fanboy on the device. Agonizing only in that it took a long time, we must clarify — reading any incarnation of our site is a soothing and life-affirming experience, of course. But how much more or less agonizing is the process on the DSi browser than on the DS/DS Lite Opera browser? DotEd of the Opera N+ blog did a comparative speed test to find out.
According to science (i.e. the one test seen in the video after the break), the DSi’s browser loads the New York Times site much quicker than the DS Lite version; even better, it loads the text first, so you can read even while images are coming in. The browser on the DSi will end up getting a lot more use than the other one (on account of being free and not requiring two separate cartridges), so it’s kind of nice that it actually works better.
[Thanks, Fernando!]

The latest issue of Famitsu reveals two new titles for Japan’s DSiWare download service, both from Namco Bandai. Korogashi Puzzle Katamari Damacy is a falling-block puzzle game starring the cast of Namco’s classic rolling-stuff-up game, seemingly involving animals between the blocks and a black hole in the distance. In classic Katamari style, we have no idea. But it says Katamari Damacy in the title, so we’re inclined to FREAK OUT — while also being a bit sad about the milking of the series. Korogashi Puzzle Katamari Damacy will be out in Japan on March 25 for 500 Nintendo Points.
In more easily-accessible news, Famitsu also revealed two more Mr. Driller games. Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits was Namco’s first DS game; now the company is returning to the well for its inaugural DSiWare title, and throwing in a WiiWare version as well! Mr. Driller for DSiWare (whose full title we can’t read in the Famitsu scan) includes a mission mode, time attack, and a Dristone mode, featuring less oxygen to pick up, and more special powerup items around the stage. This mode was removed from the North American release of Drill Spirits. The game comes out in Japan next Wednesday for 800 Points!
Mr. Driller World looks like a basic implementation of Mr. Driller on WiiWare, with a tutorial mode and some kind of “simple” play — possibly a new control scheme. It’ll be out Tuesday in Japan, also for 800 Points.
DSiWare Katamari Damacy puzzler, DSiWare/WiiWare Mr. Driller in Japan soon originally appeared on Joystiq Nintendo on Wed, 18 Feb 2009 09:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
