Korean game industry should be more like Nintendo, says president

February 10th, 2009 by Majed Athab

“A lot of our elementary school children have Nintendo [DS]. Why can’t our companies develop products like that?” These were the words of South Korean president Lee Myung-bak during his visit to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. Lee wants to bolster the Korean game industry to rival the success of Nintendo, but local game companies agree that stagnant software support in Korea won’t see that happening anytime soon.

It’s for that very same reason that GamePark Holdings’ GP2X (a Korean-made handheld system which relies on homebrew) isn’t exactly flying off the shelves. Without any sort of big-name software like Mario or Zelda included, Mr. Lee’s dream won’t come true. This is a sentiment shared by Korean developers in every sector - from mobile gaming to internet-based and PC software. If the Korean government could find a way of supporting the software industry better, helping out developers like Pentavision and NCsoft, then maybe Korea might get the ball rolling.

E308: E3 no longer ideal for core games — Miyamoto

July 18th, 2008 by Chris Greenhough

Filed under:

Shigeru Miyamoto has weighed in on the grand debate that has raged over Nintendo’s E3 press conference, addressing fan complaints that not enough “core” titles were shown. According to Shiggy, the shortage of more traditional games could be attributed to one thing: E3.

Whereas once E3 was perceived as an event for those who treated gaming as serious business, Miyamoto argues that the industry’s red-letter day is now better suited to showing off “new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now.”

Nevertheless, Miyamoto did reassure diehard fans that classic franchises were being worked on, with the Zelda, Mario, and Pikmin teams all concentrating on new games. “… We’re still working on many of those titles,” Miyamoto told MSNBC, “But [E3 is] just not the type of event where we’ll be showcasing that anymore.”

It’s interesting to note the different perspectives on this issue taken by Miyamoto and Reggie Fils-Aime. Whereas Reggie refuted the suggestion that Nintendo could have offered more “core” games, Miyamoto seems to admit that yes, there was a lack of such titles at E3, but that E3 itself was the reason behind this.

The British world-affairs magazine The Economist has honored Mr. Miyamoto-san (a.k.a. “Shiggy”) with an Innovation Award for Consumer Goods, as selected by “an independent judging panel of industry experts.” As everyone should know by now, Shigeru Miyamoto is considered as one of the greatest game designers to walk this earth and a pioneer and innovator of the industry. Not only is he a great personality, but he is also one of the key reasons for the success of video games, having created Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong and numerous other games from Super Mario 64 to Pikmin. He has also had a key role in all of Nintendo’s innovative controllers, including the Wii.

“No one is more identified with modern video games than Shigeru Miyamoto,” Econonmist business editor Tom Standage told MCV. “His pioneering vision and creativity truly created a new category of entertainment.”

Since it launched in November 2006, the Wii has been an ongoing success story. Last month The Financial Times reported that around 9 million Wii units have been sold worldwide as of the end of July. According to industry analyst firm the NPD Group, more than 4.5 million Wiis have been purchased in the US as of the end of September. Electronic Arts buys both BioWare and Pandemic Studios for $810 million!

October 11th, 2007 by supadupagama

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames published for Xbox 360 by EAElectronic Arts today announced an agreement with Elevation Partners to acquire VG Holding Corp. — the owner of both BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios. This acquisition gives EA a strong competitive position in key genres in interactive entertainment: action, adventure and role-playing games. The two studios have been recognized for creating some of the highest-quality games in the industry.

BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios have ten franchises under development, including six wholly owned games. BioWare Corp. is currently developing the highly anticipated Mass Effect, which will be published by Microsoft in November, and is in the early development stages of a massively multiplayer online game. Pandemic Studios is redefining open-world games with its upcoming Mercenaries 2: World in Flames and Saboteur, in addition to several unannounced projects.

So how much did it cost? EA will pay up to $620 million in cash to the stockholders of VG Holding Corp. and will issue up to an additional $155 million in equity to certain employees of VG Holding Corp., which will be subject to time-based or performance-based vesting criteria. EA will also assume outstanding VG Holding Corp. stock options. In addition, EA has agreed to lend VG Holding Corp. up to $35 million through the closing of the acquisition. So we’re talking about $810 million total!

Pandemic Studios and BioWare Corp. employ roughly 800 people across four studios located in Edmonton, Canada; Los Angeles; Austin; and Brisbane, Australia. John Riccitiello, EA’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “These are two of the most respected studios in the industry and I’m glad to be working with them again. They’ll make a strong contribution to our strategic growth initiatives on quality, online gaming and developing new intellectual properties.”
