NintendoWare Weekly: Water Warfare in for a Reel Fishing Challenge

June 29th, 2009 by David Hinkle

It wouldn’t be Monday without new games to download across Nintendo platforms. This week’s highlight is definitely Hudson’s first-person soaker, Water Warfare. It’s a neat concept, but we really think Hudson could’ve spent some time tightening up the graphics in level three.

One more thing: AQ Interactive announces Korg DS-10 Plus

June 27th, 2009 by JC Fletcher

How often is a publisher relaxed enough to announce a product with an extended joke? Usually, trailers are very carefully put together to attract the target market. None of that for AQ Interactive, however! The publisher revealed its new DSi-enhanced version of Korg DS-10 by having producer Nobuyoshi Sano give a fake Apple-style keynote presentation. And it’s fantastic.

As for the program, it uses the extra processing capabilities of the DSi to double the number of analog synthesizers (to four) and drum synthesizers (to eight), allows the use of twelve tracks, and features real-time editing. Korg DS-10 Plus will be out in Japan on September 17. See the faux Stevenote after the break.

VC Friday: Hudson Powers Up

June 26th, 2009 by JC Fletcher

This week in Europe, Hudson Soft has one release on all three Wii download services. That’s a pretty impressive feat, even if the individual games don’t seem that exciting. We suppose 50 sudoku puzzles for 200 points is nice, and SimEarth is a good game.

The Hudson releases are joined by Taito’s Puzzle Bobble/Bust a Move update and by Altered Beast. Now, we love Altered Beast more than most people (by which we mean we love it some), but 900 points for the arcade version? What’s that about?

WiiWare:

  • Puzzle Bobble Plus! (1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)
  • Water Warfare (1-2 players offline, 2-8 online, 800 Wii Points)

Virtual Console:

  • Altered Beast (Arcade, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)
  • SimEarth (Turbografx-16 CD-ROM, 1 player,800 Wii Points)

DSiWare:

  • Sudoku 50 for Beginners (1 player, 200 DSi Points)

Preview the Flipnote Studio site

June 23rd, 2009 by JC Fletcher

The Japanese version of Flipnote Studio, called Ugoku Memo-Chou, integrates with a special version of Japan’s Hatena blog site, allowing users to upload, share, and view videos made using the DSiWare animation app. Soon after the launch of the Japanese site, Hatena put up a partially translated version of the Ugomemo Hatena site as a preview of the eventual North American version.

The site has been somewhat of a work-in-progress since then, with some extra pages translated, including the explanation of the premium Ugomemo Hatena Plus service, and some content remaining in Japanese. It’s a sign that we’ll be able to share our insane sprite sheet flip books and cute Mario animations immediately after the service launches, whenever that happens.

DSi blows up UK sales charts

April 7th, 2009 by Justin McElroy

We don’t know if it’s their love of dual cameras or their hatred for GBA slots, but people in the UK can’t get enough of the DSi. The console has become the fourth-fastest selling in their history, even beating out the original DS and DS Lite, according to GfK-ChartTrack. Only the PSP, PS3 and Wii have done better.

GfK-ChartTrack spokesman Chris Poole says the company also noted a bump in DS software sales, especially impressive when you consider that there aren’t any DSi-specific games on shelves.

Iwata: DSi not competing with cell phones, iPod

March 1st, 2009 by Griffin McElroy

Filed under:

Though the DSi’s inclusion of music playback functionality and a digital camera may make it seem like Nintendo is attempting to compete with other multimedia devices (particularly ones whose brand names begin with a lowercase ‘i’), this really isn’t the case. At least, that’s the sentiment of Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who recently talked up the re-redesigned handheld in the latest installment of “Iwata Asks.”

Reaffirming a similar statement made around the announcement of the DSi, Iwata said Nintendo “doesn’t have any intention of directly competing with existing products” such as cell phones or iPods, adding that the media has a tendency to make up inter-corporate rivalries that don’t really exist (Panasonic vs. Atari! More at 11!). Sounds like Nintendo, the undeniable big fish in the small pond of handheld gaming, is hesitant to enter the vast, lucrative ocean of multimedia gadgetry.

You’ve got Mario in my DSi calculator app

February 28th, 2009 by Xav de Matos

So, you’ve got $2 burning a hole in your pocket and you want to calculate money you only wish you had? Well DSi users, you’re in luck with a nifty calculator. But, the convenience doesn’t end there. The application utilizes sound effects and visuals from Super Mario Bros. If you think about it, it’s a really smart idea! For years we’ve been joking that the DS prints money, but now the DSi can count it, too. Oh, technology … where would we be without you? Check out a video of the application in action after the break.

Original DSi design had two DS slots, disliked by Nintendo EAD

February 21st, 2009 by Griffin McElroy

Filed under:

In the most recent (and arguably most forthright) installment of Iwata Asks, the Nintendo head honcho sat down to bounce a few questions off of a few members of the company’s Development Engineering Department regarding the recently released Nintendo DSi. The devs outlined an interesting history of the shutterbugged handheld, one characterized on their end with “some frustration” — apparently, sticking to the technological standard of an extremely popular device while simultaneously increasing its desirable features is a difficult compromise to make twice in two years.

One of the interesting features that fell by the wayside during this compromise was an additional DS cart slot, allowing the handheld to house two titles simultaneously. This feature was apparently included in the DSi’s initial design, but lent itself to a slightly bulkier frame for the handheld, much to the chagrin of Nintendo’s Entertainment Analysis and Development division. They shot the design down, leading to the single-cart, slimmed-down design that’s currently taking Japan by storm. Man, where were those guys when the Virtual Boy was designed?
