Rumor: Metroid Prime Trilogy?

April 27th, 2008 by JC Fletcher

Filed under:

A mysterious tipster sent a rumor in to GoNintendo that a retailer database now lists a product called Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Wii. GoNintendo’s RawMeatCowboy speculates that this would be “Prime 1, (2), and 3 all on the Wii … but Prime 1 and 2 with all-new Wiimote controls.”

We believe that, if this is a real product, it’s a lot more likely that it’s the three Prime games … in a new box! Or maybe even in the same boxes, but with those inside a new box! Not that that’s a bad thing — the Prime games are very high-quality (even if you hate first-person!), and quite reminiscent of the real Metroids. The first two are definitely among the best GameCube games, and any opportunity to get them in new Wii owners’ hands would be welcome.

Metareview: Link’s Crossbow Training

November 21st, 2007 by Eric Caoili

Filed under:

Four quick explanations for why we're using this lounging lizard for the metareview's post image:
  1. Uh, he's green. Just like Link.
  2. As you can tell from his pose, he's not too impressed with Link's Crossbow Training.
  3. Look at the damn guy. Do we really need to explain ourselves? We wish we could do a metareview on the lizard instead.
  4. Consider the lizard a bonus that we're throwing in with this metareview bundle.
Priced ridiculously low at $20, Nintendo's Zapper bundle seems like an easy buy for most gamers, but for those of you who're waiting for impressions on its pack-in game, Link's Crossbow Training, we've got you covered.

GameDaily -- 80%: While GameDaily feels there's enough in there to keep you playing longer than just an hour or two, the reviewer still wishes there was more to the game: "Although it doesn't have as many options (Practice, four person multiplayer) as Nintendo's famous pack-in, Wii Sports, Crossbow Training will keep you entertained for hours, especially if you love Zelda. And yet, it could have been so much better. Had the developers programmed online leader boards, millions of trigger happy gamers could compete with each other for the best scores."

IGN -- 70%: IGN disagrees and says there's less than an hour's worth of content, but is willing to forgive the game due to its cheap price: "Lasting Appeal: Over in less than an hour. A two-player mode cannot be played simultaneously. Even getting all platinums in levels is not overly difficult. But again, it's only $19.99."

NintendoWorldReport -- 60%: NWR also has some complaints with Link's Crossbow Training's "multiplayer" support: "The game also features a multiplayer mode that misses on almost every level. Up to four players can be chosen, and then any one level can be chosen. Players then pass the Zapper around as they each play the stage alone. This passive multiplayer would make sense if they were doing it to maintain the integrity of high scores, but high scores aren't even recorded when playing in this mode. Overall, just don't expect the game to be a huge party hit, as most of the people will be sitting and watching, awaiting their turns."

Point-blank shots of the Ghost Squad Zapper bundle

October 29th, 2007 by JC Fletcher

We're not linking to Siliconera's coverage of the Japan-exclusive Ghost Squad Zapper bundle because we're jealous-- after all, with Ghost Squad at $30, we're actually getting a better deal on the Zapper and the game. All we're missing is the huge box, and that's no loss.

But what we do care about (in a professional capacity) are the close-up pictures and details of the Zapper. Spencer Yip opened the thing up and provided detailed pictures of its setup. The process, including opening a panel and coiling the Nunchuk cord inside the compartment, seems well-thought-out and well-designed, with the intention of holding everything in place. However, we can spot two obvious problems.

First, the process appears to take a long time. This may dissuade the more casual players from using the Wii, as it renders the whole thing a lot less pick-up-and-play. Second, use of the Zapper, like the Guitar Hero III controller, necessitates removal of the Wii remote jacket that Nintendo seems so intent on having us all use.

There is actually a third problem, and it's the one that weighs most heavily on us: the gun shell is, disappointingly, not dolphin-shaped.

Ghost Squad gets a new bundle-friendly price

October 23rd, 2007 by JC Fletcher

We're technically calling this a rumor, since prices change all the time on online stores and don't represent the final sale prices. But with Amazon and GameStop both making the same change on the same day, we feel confident that Ghost Squad will actually retail for $29.99 when it comes out on November 20th.

That means that we can now approximate a Ghost Squad Zapper bundle. Buying Ghost Squad and a Zapper now would set you back $50-- the cost of most new games-- and would get you Link's Crossbow Training as a bonus. Or you could just save money and hold your controllers yourself!

We think that releasing the game simultaneously with the Zapper, and at a price that encourages buying it with the 'hardware', is a good move on Sega's part. We hope somebody manages to notice this move a week after Super Mario Galaxy's release.

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles’ Zapper bundle: it comes with stuff!

October 12th, 2007 by JC Fletcher

Oh, look, it's a collectors' edition bundle that probably won't leave Japan! What a fresh and exciting idea, Capcom! And it's for a Resident Evil game, too-- that series never has any promotional stuff!

This time, Capcom's offering a special "Expert Package" of Biohazard: Umbrella Chronicles (also known as Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, of course), which contains the game, a special full-color, 28-page book called Wesker's Extra Report ("For some reason, people have been trying to eat my head a lot. Conclusion: I am delicious.") and stickers! It also includes some white plastic thing. It'll cost 8,610 yen ($74), just $12 more than the non-bundled version.

Extras aside, we would love to choose which game we got with our Zapper. Japan gets this and a Ghost Squad bundle, whereas we get Link's Crossbow Training only. Japanese gamers can get the regular Zapper bundle and then also one of these, ending up with two games and two shells. We're stuck with multiple Crossbow discs.

The Play ‘n Learn bundle issue cleared up, sort of

October 10th, 2007 by JC Fletcher

The UPC code currently associated with the "Wii Play 'n Learn" name has been revealed as the most boring of all new hardware configurations, according to Chris Kohler: the regular Wii package with a Wiimote jacket included. But something as pedestrian as that probably wouldn't get an edutaining new name, right?

1up contacted Nintendo about the UPC, and Nintendo told them in no uncertain terms that "Wii Play 'n Learn" was definitely not related to any hardware bundle, including the one it's associated to. They cited a possible mistake in the UPC filing. That means that "Wii Play 'n Learn" is something else. Our guess is that it's probably some kind of game which enables you to learn-- while playing.

Xbox 360 holiday bundle

October 9th, 2007 by astrotriforce

Xbox 360 Two-Game BundleIf you have yet to buy an Xbox 360, don’t despair! Microsoft has just announced it’s holiday deal where you will get two free games with your purchase of an Xbox 360 or Xbox 360 Elite! This is a great deal for those who have yet to “Jump In” and make the plunge.

The game’s on offer are the highly acclaimed racing game sequel Forza Motorsport 2 and the top-down hack-and-slash RPG Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. Getting these two games free with the console is a savings of $90, so if you want a 360, now would be a great time so you can take advantage of this deal. Both bundles (for the regular and Elite) will be available for purchase at retailers starting at the end of October, just in time for the holidays. — Xbox.com

‘New Pack’ named: Wii Play ‘N Learn

October 8th, 2007 by JC Fletcher

Filed under:

The new Wii hardware bundle discovered last week looks like it's going to be something a little more significant than just the same Wii with included controller jackets, or a second controller. The UPC information has been updated with a new name for the unit: "Wii Play 'N Learn." Which certainly makes it sound like a toy for preschoolers. Or maybe it's Wii-themed playground equipment! It certainly doesn't sound like Nintendo is marketing this new bundle at the older audience they usually go for. Could this mean that Nintendo is switching gears to a more kid-friendly marketing scheme?

Ill-advised branding aside, the obvious guess for what's in the bundle would be Wii Play and maybe Big Brain Academy. Really, any bundle that includes Wii Play('s extra controller) will be very welcome during the holiday season. Of course, we have no idea what'll be in the Play 'N Learn box, or even if that will turn out to be a real product.

Wii Warm Up: Through the roof

January 1st, 1970 by Alisha Karabinus

Filed under:

Just yesterday, we were discussing the insane prices for Wiis on eBay, but the online auction service isn't the only place anxious consumers will pay through the nose for a Wii. Bundles at many stores, even with multiple games, are more than they should be for all the components included, and all the Amazon marketplace sellers are charging crazy amounts for consoles. As the month wears on, how high do you think prices will go -- and how do you feel about the phenomenon, particularly in regard to retailers overcharging for bundles?
