Downgrade Alert! WiiWare’s Shootanto sequel ditches T-Rexes for Nazis

January 31st, 2009 by Xav de Matos

In December, Shootanto hit Japan’s WiiWare service; a shooter that pits a pair of monkeys against a plethora of prehistoric baddies armed with magical coconuts. Yes, that sentence just happened. Take it all in. Not content with releasing one insanely ridiculous title, developer Grand Prix is back with the upcoming WiiWare sequel, Shootanto: Miraihen (Shootanto: Future Chapter).

Where will the (almost guaranteed to be Japanese exclusive) WiiWare title be set? Will it be a horrific future or maybe a land where man battles beast? Not quite. Shootanto: Future Chapter brings the shooter into the World War II setting. Honestly, we’re thankful. We were getting tired of those “monkey throwing magical coconut” titles. Time they focus on a setting that doesn’t get a lot of video game love.

World of Goo publisher files for bankruptcy

January 30th, 2009 by Xav de Matos

GameDaily BIZ has learned that family-friendly publisher, Brighter Minds, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy on January 28. Chapter 11 bankruptcy allows the publisher to remain in control of its business as it makes organizational changes, unlike chapter 7, which would mean a complete liquidation of its assets. In July 2008, Brighter Minds launched its own online games portal, BeanstalkGames.com.

Recently the Ohio-based company published the critically acclaimed and award-winning World of Goo from developer 2D Boy. Winner of the IGF award for Design Innovation and Technical Excellence, World of Goo recently made NPD Top 10 sales list for the week ending January 17. The NPD listing was a surprise, considering World of Goo designer Ron Carmel revealed the game to have staggering 90% piracy rate in November. Those damn dirty pirates!

Analyst: Chinatown Wars a test for both Take-Two, Nintendo

January 30th, 2009 by Alexander Sliwinski

Analyst Dough Creutz of Cowen Group believes GTA: Chinatown Wars is as much a test for Take-Two as it is for Nintendo. Gamasutra reports on Creutz’s bullish investor note, where he expresses that the title will reveal Take-Two’s “ability to make inroads” on Nintendo’s platforms.

On the flip side, he expresses that Nintendo wants Chinatown Wars to succeed because it appeals to core gamers, whom Creutz apparently thinks Nintendo still gives a Yoshi’s turd about.

Nintendo games account for almost half of 2008 software sales

January 26th, 2009 by Chris Greenhough

Filed under:

In case you needed it confirmed yet again: Nintendo totally wins at selling stuff. Gamasutra went through the NPD statistics for 2008 software sales with a fine tooth-comb, and discovered that Wii and DS titles formed almost half of all games sold during 2008.

Of the 268 million games sold in the U.S. last year, 132 million (49%) were for Nintendo platforms, compared to 86 million (32%) for Sony consoles, and 50 million (19%) for Microsoft. Furthermore, the Wii software tie-in ratio isn’t looking too shabby: an even six games per system, an identical figure to that of the PlayStation 3.

For more statistics that make us want to joyously high-five a bobcat, hit up Gamasutra.

Wii Warm Up: Bikini Zombie Marketing

January 25th, 2009 by JC Fletcher

Filed under:

The live-action Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers ads have taken a unique and creative approach to game advertising. Trailers tend to be totally dry affairs stitched together from in-game CG and occasional gameplay, but D3 decided to indulge in ridiculous skits set in a world where zombies live alongside humans, and suffer discrimination (or worse) just for eating people being different.

Did you find the ads funny? Did they affect your opinion about the game at all? And even if you didn’t necessarily dig these particular skits, do you think publishers would do well to explore this kind of content as a break from the usual trailer format?

de Sequel

January 24th, 2009 by Chris Greenhough

Filed under:

Last year’s de Blob found a squishy, colorful place in all of our hearts and, more importantly, sold enough copies to make THQ keen on a sequel. Speaking to IGN, a representative for the publisher expressed pleasure at de Blob’s performance worldwide, promising that we can “expect to see more of de Blob in the future.” We’ll hold you to that, THQ.

Something else of interest in IGN’s article: NPD data shows that de Blob sold 230,000 copies in North America between September 22 and the end of 2008, whereas Wario Land: Shake It! moved only 150,000 copies in the exact same period. de Blob isn’t just a third-party “core” success — it’s even outsold a rival title from Nintendo!
