Mystery title from Monster Games kicks speculation into high gear

November 29th, 2008 by Alisha Karabinus

Filed under:

Looks like Monster Games — the folks behind the Wii launch title Excite Truck — are hard at work on a super secret new project for the console, and have been for a long time. How secret is it? So secret, apparently, that they have to turn down their monitors when unauthorized folks walk into the office. Sounds like anything but an Excite Truck follow-up, eh? There aren’t many reasons to keep that a secret. So what could it be? Monster Games only seems to put out racing titles, so we’re gonna bet there will be vehicles and high speeds, but that could cover a lot of ground. Some have guessed that it might be an all-new F-Zero, but frankly, we’re holding out for something that’s really new and not a revival. Not that we wouldn’t enjoy a little F-Zero, but we like new things, too.

Guitar Hero World Tour gets Yahtzeed

November 27th, 2008 by Chris Greenhough

For his latest Zero Punctuation review, renowned intertubes misanthrope Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw has cast his jaded eye over Activision’s Guitar Hero: World Tour.

Things start off well between reviewer and game (though Rock Band’s troubled relationship with Australia undoubtedly has something to do with this) but Yahtzee soon finds assorted holes to pick at, with some of his targets including the pointlessness of Spanish language songs in an English language release, the new slide bar on World Tour’s guitars, and the game’s credentials as a karaoke simulator. Hit up The Escapist for the review in full or simply jump past the break.

Monolith reflects on Disaster non-sales, mentions a sequel

November 26th, 2008 by Chris Greenhough

Filed under:

It is difficult to envisage a second Disaster: Day of Crisis game, for two reasons:

  1. How any follow-up could top the unlikely mélange of disasters (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, terrorists, bears) that featured in the first game is beyond us. Perhaps an asteroid?
  2. Sales of the first game. Or the lack thereof.

Nevertheless, developer Monolith Soft is at least open to the idea of a Disaster 2. In an interview with Cubed3, Director Keiichi Ono revealed that “…there were so many wonderful options [in the game]. We would like to see the possibility for them, if we have chance to develop the sequel…” The sequel? Or a sequel? The difference is pretty crucial! While we’re not exactly taking that as rock-solid confirmation of Ray’s return, it’s an interesting remark.

To bring us back down to earth, Nintendo’s Hitoshi Yamagami reminded us of why the first game might not even come to North America, describing how Disaster is “performing lower than expected” at the tills.

Wii Warm Up: Made into a movie?

November 25th, 2008 by David Hinkle

Filed under:

Yesterday’s very awesome trailer for a Mega Man movie got us thinking. What game property would you like to see made into a film? Hollywood has tried to do it several times and pretty much failed through and through, but with what source material would you like them to try to make a competent film? A Legend of Zelda movie? Would you like to see F-Zero: The Movie? Well, out with it!

North America also getting House of the Dead: Overkill bonus

November 24th, 2008 by Chris Greenhough

The House of the Dead: Overkill collector’s edition bundle is one of the best preorder items we’ve seen in a while, so it was understandably upsetting when Sega initially revealed the package as a Europe-only bonus. You can pack that pitchfork away for another day, however, because Sega has confirmed it will be spreading the love to North America. Preorder Overkill at GameStop, GameCrazy, or Amazon, and you’ll have the option to bag all of this. Yum.

Wii Warm Up: With the kids

November 23rd, 2008 by Alisha Karabinus

Have kids, or maybe younger siblings or cousins? If so, it’s likely that, sometimes, you play games with them — but what to play? The Brainy Gamer has a list of actually-good games that are also kid-friendly, and while this set is definitely a great place to start, we’re betting you can add some more. Obviously, Wii Sports will always be good family fare, but with the holiday season kicking into gear, we’ll probably be playing more and more games with the family. So what do you choose?

It’s-a Mario World: Two Years on Wii

November 22nd, 2008 by Kenneth Caldwell

Filed under:

As both game character and flagship intellectual property, Mario has long been the focal point of Nintendo’s efforts. Thanks in no small part to creative genius Shiggy Miyamoto, Mario’s adventures have ushered in some of the most pivotal games in the history of electronic entertainment. His moves have established and defined the entire platforming genre, and he almost single-handedly paved the way from 2D to 3D action-adventure games.

To put these landmark achievements into perspective, consider the Wii: This week marks the second birthday of Nintendo’s current money-printing console. To what extent has Mario enriched the platform in the two years it has been sold out available? The increasingly casual (and characteristically generic) orientation of popular first-party titles like Wii Sports and Wii Fit have stolen some of the Nintendo spotlight from under the ’stach of our able plumber, and the marketing appeal of the Wii Remote has powerfully overshadowed the age-old run and jump control mechanic. Does Mario still sell games? Good god, yes. But how much have his games determined the success of the Wii? In this week’s gallery, we examine the significance of Mario’s Wii appearances to date. Enjoy!

It’s-a Mario World is a weekly feature in which the ubiquity of Nintendo’s flagship character is celebrated: We’ll incessantly ruminate about mustache wax, debate the curious whereabouts of the princess and covet the luminous power stars strewn about the galaxy. Check back here every Friday to find out what strange and wonderful thing has got us tipping our caps.

Surprisingly rare and expensive GameCube games

November 22nd, 2008 by David Hinkle

We love a lot of GameCube games. In fact, when Play on Wii was announced, it felt like a dream come true. See, we imagine many GameCube games being retooled for Wii. Now, we’re glad its actually happening for some of those games.

But, not all titles are destined to get that touch of Wii magic. And, what if you never had a chance to try some of them? Well, unless you’ve got a suitcase buried in the back yard, there are a few titles that might be a bit out of reach, according to the list over at Video Game Price Charts.

Of all of them, which would you say is the “must own” title?
