Wii Warm Up: Third-party rundown

January 1st, 1970 by Candace Savino

Filed under:

Some analysts like to paint a grim picture for third-party developers, but we certainly wouldn't be enjoying our Wiis as much without some third-party games in our library. With that said, what's your favorite third-party game that you own (or have played), and what one are you most looking forward to?

December 10th: American Pokemans get shown

January 1st, 1970 by JC Fletcher

Filed under:

On December 10th, six days after the Japanese launch of Pokémon Snap, the American Virtual Console will feature the rail-photography game. To promote the release, the online Toonami Jetstream channel will show a week of Pokémon cartoon episodes featuring Todd, the protagonist of Snap who was hamfistedly crammed into the show to help sell cartridges.

Why should you care about a Pokémon spinoff game? We'll recap:
  1. It's a pretty okay game
  2. Judged against other Pokémon spinoff games, it's a freakin' masterpiece
  3. Expanded functionality allows you to share photos with Wii Friends
  4. (if you're me) More attention on Pokémon Snap could finally get the "photography game" genre going, or at least convince Hudson to let us download Photograph Boy.
So, in conclusion, Photograph Boy is a great game. What? Oh, right. The Pokemans thing is good too.

Circuit City giving away 21 Wiis

January 1st, 1970 by Candace Savino

Filed under:

Sure, the chances of ever winning anything in a giveaway are slimmer than Kate Moss, but it never hurts to try. With that said, Circuit City (of the dot com variety) will be giving away one Wii per day from 12/2 (today) to 12/22. All you need to do to enter is put in your email, so at least the effort isn't too taxing for such a futile endeavor. Of course, you have to be a U.S. citizen (or in a U.S. territory or Puerto Rico) to take part in the sweepstakes (damn the law). Anyway, good luck to all who enter, we're sure you're going to need it.

Wii Warm Up: USB me

January 1st, 1970 by David Hinkle

Filed under:

Aside from charging a Wiimote dock or utilization the limited keyboard support, you might not think the USB ports on the back of that sexy Wii of yours are useful in regards to much else. In this day and age, lots of things can charge or run on USB. Heck, we know we charge our cell phone on USB more often than whipping out the AC adapter and plugging it into an outlet.

Considering that, we wanted to know how you're making use of the Wii's USB ports. If you leave your console in standby, you can charge this or that through your Wii. So, how do you make use of the USB ports?

Graphs point out Wii’s immaturity

January 1st, 1970 by Candace Savino

Filed under:

Gamasutra has taken the time to compare the distribution of ESRB rated games for this and last generations' consoles. But, the best part is, they took the time to make some delicious graphs for us.

Some findings in this study are not surprising, such as the fact that the Nintendo consoles (the GBA, DS, GameCube, and Wii) have a significantly smaller percentage of mature games than their competitors. What is interesting, though, is that the Wii (so far) has a smaller percentage of mature games than its predecessor, the GameCube.

The reason we find this of note is because the GameCube was largely regarded as a "kiddie" system by many of its critics, and yet it had a larger distribution of "M" games than the GBA, DS, or Wii. The GameCube was also the least successful (in terms of sales and arguably in other areas, too) of all the consoles in the study.

As a Nintendo gamer, what is your take on the distribution of mature games for the Wii? Is it okay to be so largely outnumbered by games with other ratings, or do you wish Nintendo would find more balance? The small percentage of mature games certainly hasn't hindered the Wii's success so far, but can it alienate the "hardcore" gamers in the future?

No More Heroes intro turns us into wannabe assassins

January 1st, 1970 by Candace Savino

Filed under:

No More Heroes may be too hard (for wusses), but if you think that means we're going to stop our blatantly ridiculous amount of coverage for this game, you're wrong. In fact, after hearing about the difficulty (even if it was a fake translation), we're more pumped than ever.

Our latest update brings you the game's English intro, according to Gametrailers. We love how the game completely demolishes the fourth wall, although some people may find that irritating. Also of note is Travis Touchdown whistling the NMH theme at the beginning.

Caveat: We at NWF are rating this trailer NSFW due to cursing, violence, and Sylvia in skimpy outfits.

Wonder Boy on the VC makes us wonder what’s going on

January 1st, 1970 by Candace Savino

Filed under:

If you're a fan of the Wonder Boy series like ourselves, but want to make sure you buy the right game on the Virtual Console (and not two copies of the same game, which is possible), Chris Kohler over at Game|Life fortunately sheds some light on the situation. Hudson seems to enjoy messing with us, so if you're interested in purchasing one of these games, then it's worth checking out Kohler's little guide.

Also, we're still waiting for the day that the VC supports the Sega Master System. Hear that, Nintendo? And make it snappy.

Wii Warm Up: The questing continues some more

January 1st, 1970 by Eric Caoili

Filed under:

As if responding to the concerns we raised yesterday, D3Publisher announced what changes and additions gamers can expect with the Wii port of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. Shouldn't we have heard about these details at an earlier date, preferably before the game was shipped out?

Anyway, this new Wii version of the puzzle/RPG hybrid has rebalanced elements, a replay option for capturing monsters, and a two-player multiplayer mode. As we predicted, there are no online features, unlike the Xbox Live Arcade and PC releases. Developer Vicious Cycle Software did, however, make sure to integrate "waggle control options with the Wii Remote."

Were any of you actually hoping for motion-based controls? Or were you wishing, like we were, that the developer would focus its efforts on implementing the primary feature fans of the handheld versions were asking for? We'll probably pick up Puzzle Quest anyway; we just wish we could play against some of you online.

Gabe and Tycho may have a Wii adventure

January 1st, 1970 by Alisha Karabinus

In an interview with Nintendo World Report, Penny Arcade's Mike Krahulik did not rule out the possibility that Penny Arcade Adventures may journey to Wii Ware. In fact, the idea was embraced with (hesitant) enthusiasm. "It's definitely something that we're investigating. I don't think I can say anything more than that ... I'll say I would love to, I would love to do it, man. I hope we can."

Considering how crazy we are for anything with an incredibly silly title around here, we'll say that we would love it as well. While it sounds like the game is nothing more than a vague possibility for Wii owners at this point, it's enough to get us crossing our fingers and hoping for our own little section On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness.

WRUP: Well has run dry edition

January 1st, 1970 by David Hinkle

Looking over this week's releases, we're not all too excited about any of the offerings. And, looking at the previous week's releases, we've completed just about every other game we wanted to play. But, good thing we have yet to finish Super Mario Galaxy, so we'll have that to play. What about you all? Are you working on anything?

Maybe you followed our advice and picked up Zack & Wiki or you're waiting to win our latest Fanswag giveaway so you have something new to play?
